The factory

Where analogue engineering, precision and passion for vinyl come together

Founded in 2020 and based just outside Rome, AFG Record Manufacturing is an independent vinyl manufacturing facility bringing together mastering, high-end lacquer cutting and record pressing under one roof. Our production process combines carefully selected analogue equipment, modern engineering and a dedicated team with a hands-on approach to every stage of manufacturing. At the heart of our facility are a legendary Neumann VMS70 lacquer cutting system and a Pheenix Alpha AD12 record press, allowing us to maintain direct control over two of the most critical stages of vinyl production. Working alongside Enisslab for professional audio mastering, we provide an integrated workflow designed to achieve accurate sound reproduction, consistent pressing quality and reliable production standards. From the initial audio preparation to the finished record, our approach is built around technical expertise, precision and attention to detail.

Philosophy

We believe that producing a great record requires more than high-end equipment. It demands experience, technical understanding and close attention to every stage of the process. As an independent facility, we maintain a direct and flexible approach to production, working closely with artists, record labels and distributors to understand the specific requirements of each release. Our compact structure allows our team to remain directly involved throughout the manufacturing process, from mastering and cutting to pressing, quality control and final packaging. Rather than relying on a standardised approach, we focus on finding the right technical solutions for each project, combining precision, consistency and flexibility. Every record matters. Every detail counts.

Sustainability

Responsible manufacturing. Reduced waste. We recognise the environmental challenges associated with vinyl manufacturing and believe that responsible production starts with efficient processes, careful material selection and waste reduction. Our standard PVC compound uses calcium-zinc stabilisers, providing a lead-free alternative to traditional stabilisation systems. We also offer alternative compounds, including bio-attributed PVC options, upon request and subject to availability. Where technically appropriate, production waste is recovered and reprocessed, helping to reduce material consumption and minimise unnecessary waste. Our facility also operates a closed-loop cooling water system, designed to limit water consumption during pressing operations. Packaging is another important part of our approach. We prioritise recyclable cardboard materials and responsibly sourced packaging wherever possible. Our goal is straightforward: to manufacture high-quality records while continuously improving the efficiency and environmental performance of our production process.

Technology

Our facility is built around a carefully selected combination of professional analogue equipment and specialised manufacturing technology. Our in-house cutting studio features a Neumann VMS70 equipped with an SX74 cutting head, one of the most respected lacquer cutting systems ever developed. Combined with professional mastering services provided in collaboration with Enisslab, the studio enables precise preparation and transfer of audio onto lacquer masters, with careful control over cutting levels, groove geometry and the technical requirements of the vinyl format. For record manufacturing, we operate a Pheenix Alpha AD12, a modern evolution of the legendary Toolex Alpha pressing technology. Our pressing process is supported by dedicated steam generation, temperature regulation, cooling and compressed-air systems, allowing careful control of the mechanical and thermal conditions involved in record production. From the cutting lathe to the pressing machine, every component of our production chain has been selected with a clear objective: accurate sound reproduction, consistent manufacturing and reliable results.

The challenge of vinyl

Vinyl manufacturing is a complex process in which audio engineering, mechanical precision and material behaviour come together. Unlike digital formats, vinyl requires sound to be physically transferred into a continuous spiral groove and subsequently reproduced through a mechanical playback system. Every stage introduces specific technical considerations, from frequency response, phase correlation and cutting levels to groove geometry, material consistency and pressing conditions. With our Neumann VMS70 cutting system and Pheenix Alpha AD12 press operating within the same facility, we can approach these challenges through a closely coordinated production workflow. By combining traditional analogue engineering with modern production techniques, we aim to preserve the integrity of the original recording while respecting the physical characteristics of the format. Precision is not an option. It is part of the process.
